No, it's not a real saddle and it doesn't allow small critters to ride the chicken. One problem I have had with my hens has to do with over amorous roosters. They will rub the feathers off a patch on their back, then the other chickens start picking at the patch making it bigger. I have had some girls with nary a single feather on their butt. The pattern given here comes from Homesteading Today's website. This is a simple Apron type device that straps over the chickens wings and protects her backside. I am definantly going to try it this year.

I got to be your first follower! It's neat to get the first, 10, 20th and I'm still waiting for my 25th!
ReplyDeleteLove the saddle and I might need one. My roo's fav hen is loosing some feathers and I hate those sun burned backs!
How long is the strap to hold it on? The pattern doesn't give that. TIA!
Oh my gosh! Somebody is reading. I'm having a great day! LOL. I'm not sure how long that is, but based on the pic I would estimate about 10-12"(Notice it's all one piece of elastic). I guess you could custom fit your hen, like pants on a dress suit.
ReplyDeleteVery cool - I've GOT to do something for a couple of my girls. I wonder why it's just a couple of them and not more? Any ideas. By the way - I got to be #2 :-)
ReplyDeleteI am so happy to have you here. I'm working on my chicken plucker now, so don't get bored. I think it's a really fun project and I hope you like it. :)
ReplyDeleteDo you think this would fit a guinea hen? I have a guinea that lost a few feathers just under its wing. The other hens are picking a bit. She's healthy otherwise; I hate to separate her from the rest of the chickens and her pal guinea if I don't have to (and I don't have an ideal place to keep her just yet). Her body is a bit longer...
